the Hole?

| The stakes just went up a couple of
notches for the war between Wikileaks and the US Government as the plot
thickens. |
| Switch
Plus, Ltd in Zurich, Switzerland is the new host for Wikileaks after
Amazon and PayPal have ended their relationship with Assange as a result
of political pressure coming from US Senator Joe Lieberman. However, the
Wikileaks gap-insurance.aes256 file lives on. If you are not familiar with
the hot issue, allow us to enlighten you. |
| To begin with, I picked up this tidbit at
"Jester's Court", a known serious hacker that gives a unique
perspective on this issue. This is what he wrote sometime back... |
| WikiLeaks recently published a
mysterious encrypted 1.4GB file titled
“insurance.aes256′′ on their Afghan War Logs page,
with no explanation. While much speculation has been going on as
to the origins and purpose of the file, much of it saying that it
is ‘insurance’ against WikiLeaks being taken down by the
United States government, and contains ‘terrible secrets.’
WikiLeaks neither confirms nor denies the purpose of the file. But
it remains there. |
|
| So,
in effect, Wikileaks is attempting to hold the U.S. Government at bay by
holding this file in reserve – allowing anyone to download it, but
rendering it useless without the key. Whether or not it’s a bluff, and
the file is just (encrypted) random noise, or if it actually has sensitive
information contained within it, is irrelevant (until the key code is
released). |
|
So the big what if here is, does Assange have an ace in
the hole with this file? It's been disseminated world wide already.
Have a look...

In an online chat with The Guardian
newspaper, Assange said material from the diplomatic cables and other
documents had been sent in encrypted form "to over 100,000
people." "If something happens to us, the key
parts will be released automatically," Assange stated. |
|
Here is the verbatim Q&A posted by the
Guardian... |
| rajiv1857:
Also, if you get "taken out" - and that could be
technical, not necessarily physical - what are the alternatives
for your cache of material? |
Is there a 'second
line' of activists in place that would continue the campaign?
Is your material 'dispersed' so that taking out one cache would
not necessarily mean the end of the game? |
 |
Julian Assange: The
Cable Gate archive has been spread, along with significant
material from the US and other countries to over 100,000 people in
encrypted form. If something happens to us, the key parts will be
released automatically. |
| Further, the Cable Gate archives
is in the hands of multiple news organisations. History will win.
The world will be elevated to a better place. Will we survive?
That depends on you. |
|
| If you decide to download the
file(s) and wait on the potential release of the key code. Post the file
also into file sharing networks to be able to make available to others in
the event of the publication of the key code. |
| Anyone
can download the actual ‘insurance.aes256′ file direct from
WikiLeaks’ own servers if you can gain access to his Afghan War Logs
page. Here is a torrent link to the 1.39 gib file at The
Pirate Bay. (1491834576 Bytes) |
| Jester made an educational point for the
lay man... "There are ways to conceal information in a file where the
same file can be accessed, with different passwords where each password
yields different information." |
| The Guardian
reported; "Swiss host 'Switch' says there is 'no reason' why
WikiLeaks should be forced off internet, despite French and US
demands". |
